Houston Race Series LLC is proud to announce that the Typhoon Texas Kids Triathlon will once again be a part of the USA Triathlon South Midwest Regional Youth Race Series on May 21, 2017.
In 2016, the event's first year, over 1,100 kids ages 7-17 completed the race making it the 2nd largest kids-only triathlon in the world. The event includes two race distances (short and long course) to accommodate kids of all ages and skill levels. The short course consists of a 100-meter swim, 2-mile bike ride, and 1-mile run while the long course is a 200-meter swim, 4-mile bike ride, and 2-mile run. The swim takes place in the lazy river at the Typhoon Texas Waterpark, the athletes will then bike on a completely closed course around the Katy Mills Mall, and then will run to the finish inside the Waterpark. After the race participants and families can enjoy a private preview of the Typhoon Texas Waterpark with all the slide and other amenities open before the start of the regular season. Participants receive a free entry to the after party with their registration and additional tickets may be purchased at over half off the regular ticket price for the Waterpark.
The South Midwest Region of USA Triathlon (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas) features one of America's only youth triathlon race series for young people 7-15 years of age. Divided into age groups (7-8, 9-10, 11-12,13-15) and male/female divisions, kids are able to compete against their peers in search of a South Midwest (SMW) Regional Youth Race Series Championship.
This year's series features 9 races culminating in a double point, SMW Youth Regional Championship. Individual points are scored through placement in each triathlon entered, the more events completed the greater chance of garnering points. At the end of the season, the total points are calculated and the top 3 per age group are identified as SMW Youth Regional Champions, receive an award and certificate to honor their accomplishment.
Youth races within the series are directed by Independent Race Directors who develop their respective event to parallel USAT recommended race distances, age groups, and closely follow USAT Youth Supplemental Rules.
